THE DESIGNER, THE CREATION & THE WAREDROBE

TATYANA DESIGN

What sparked your interest in fashion growing up?

Being surrounded by three generations of amazing people with great skills and an eagerness to share. Learning about fashion and sewing at the early age.

When did you decide to pursue a career in fashion?

I started sewing at 5, and made clothes for myself for long time before even considering fashion as a career. Moving to Australia as a young adult opened new possibilities and fashion could be pursued as a career

Are you self-taught or did you study fashion?

I think I absorbed a huge amount from many wonderful people: my grandmother, my aunty and lots of other people eager to teach their skills – how to use sewing and embroidery machines AND how to look after them, how to draw sketches, construct patterns and how to fit.

Since then I have sought out good teachers to hone and expand my skill set – eg my patternmaking teachers who have taught me the importance of construction and fit.

What defining moments in your life have shaped your design aesthetic?

It goes far back to childhood, when I started working with high end fabrics and developing an appreciation and respect for fabric and its character.

Always design for the fabric, don’t try to change it, don’t try to “break” it and it will reward you with most beautiful garments!

What struggles did you face launching your own label?

Getting fabric of the quality I wanted has been a major hurdle. That and insisting on producing my premium range in Australia - finding highly gifted artisans here is a challenge – but thankfully there are some.

Who or what is your greatest inspiration?

Dior for loving women and creating luxury when nobody was expecting it and Vivienne Westwood for continue to be herself when others would have given up

What do you think your niche is as a designer?

Definitely Luxury

If your designs could speak, what would they say?

They would tell boudoir stories of amazing, confident and sensual ladies 😉

What has been your biggest achievement?

Being included in Selection Catwalk at the Salon Internationale de la Lingerie, Paris.  It was recognition of the quality of my designs and manufacture

What do you plan to achieve in the near future?

Expand my client base to the USA

Just as my previous generations of family, I will start teaching soon and I’m looking forward to my students achieving something they didn’t think was possible

Is there anything you would have done differently?

Like every creative person, I preferred to spend my time on creating when I should have put more effort into marketing early on.

What advice would you give to emerging designers?

Understand the garment construction so your inspired sketches become eminently wearable and indispensable elements of any wardrobe.

What motto do you live by?

“I would rather choke on greatness than nibble on mediocracy!”

When you’re not running your label, what do you enjoy doing?

Walking in parks, going to galleries and visiting exhibitions with my wonderful husband.
